Summary

◇ The briefing

How 2290 e-filing works.

IRS Form 2290 is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) return required for commercial motor vehicles weighing 55,000 lbs or more. We e-file your return and deliver the IRS-stamped Schedule 1 directly to your inbox.

Here is what happens after you place your order.

Submit Your Business & Vehicle Information

Provide your EIN, business details, VINs, and gross vehicle weights. We verify the data for IRS compliance before proceeding.

We E-File Your Form 2290 with the IRS

Our system submits your return electronically through an IRS-authorized e-file provider. E-filed returns are processed within minutes — not weeks.

IRS Processes Your Return

The IRS validates your EIN, VINs, and tax calculation. For e-filed returns, acceptance is typically within minutes to a few hours.

Schedule 1 Delivered to Your Inbox

Once the IRS accepts your return, your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 is emailed to you — ready for DMV registration, renewals, or your compliance file.

◇ Why it matters

Why is Form 2290 required?

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax funds highway infrastructure. The IRS requires an annual return for every truck with a gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more that operates on public highways. Without a valid IRS-stamped Schedule 1, your state DMV will not process your vehicle registration.

IRS Penalties Start Immediately

The IRS charges 4.5% per month for late filing plus 0.5% per month for late payment. Interest compounds from the due date.

DMV Registration Blocked

State DMVs require a current Schedule 1 to register or renew any qualifying vehicle. No Schedule 1 = no registration.

Annual Filing Required

The tax period runs July 1 through June 30 each year. The filing deadline is August 31. Mid-year acquisitions must file within 30 days of first use.
